The name Metzenbaum derives from its designer Myron Firth Metzenbaum an American surgeon who specialized in oral and reconstructive surgery.

Using this scissors mucosal incision for tonsillectomy can be made with precision. This same scissors can be used to cut the silk after bleeder from the tonsillar fossa has been tied.
